The bwiseIP product suite is split into two streams:
The bwiseIP strength is our close working relationship with our
clients, becoming a part of the organisation and sharing the same
goals for our client's IP, rather than working in a purely advisory
capacity.
Working so closely with our clients allows us to understand the
relationship between the IP strategy and the overall business plan
and how they affect the everyday operation of the organisation.
The bwiseIP goal is to help our clients attain their commercial
objectives by appropriate and strategic exploitation of their IP.
We implement systems and procedures to identify, examine and manage
client IP.
BwiseIP IP management can include cultivating an IP culture by
educating staff about IP matters and introducing an infrastructure
by which ongoing IP management is able to be maintained by the client.
A complete IP strategy takes in the whole process of identifying
new IP, protecting it and then further research and protection is
ongoing. Other areas of our expertise are commercialisation and
licence negotiations.
IP protection and maintenance is an expensive exercise. Efficient
management of IP is essential to avoid unnecessary costs.
Our IP Management Framework takes the guess-work out of IP management.
Our clients however, are not required to purchase software packages
or new hardware in order for BwiseIP to implement our proprietary
IP Management framework.
- Plug and play, turnkey, the total solution
The importance of this function is that bwiseIP takes ownership
of all IP responsibilities.
We can manage all aspects of your IP portfolio, from the administrative
duties of keeping track of Attorneys correspondence to chairing
IP committee meetings, where strategic management decisions are
taken.
bwiseIP staff become the interface between your IP and all other
stakeholders.
The benefit of this is that it allows your employees (usually CTO/technical
& legal/executive) to focus on other priorities, while we effectively
and efficiently manage your IP portfolio.
We become the interface with (internally) finance, marketing, management,
technical, operations, R&D and (externally) attorneys, other
consultants, licensors and licensees. As your R&D and product
development cycle continues, we maintain the evolutionary process
of the interface between the IP and the R&D.
bwiseIP applies an extremely flexible framework to in-house IP
Management to suit the needs of our clients. We can either implement
our full IP Management Framework or can work with your internal
resources to achieve the right balance for your business.
Our tools allow us to separate administrative and strategic matters
and use resources appropriately and efficiently. bwiseIP consultants
can be placed within your organisation to undertake general IP administrative
duties or IP specialists can undertake the function of strategic
and business management of your IP. Clients can have admin function
going along at minimal monthly cost and every six months bring in
the strategic aspects
IP projects can be broken into two main areas:
BwiseIP can operate on a project basis to prepare IP strategic
plans.
This entails identification of both internal and external IP landscapes
and then a strategic plan detailing a value analysis, a jurisdiction
matrix, potential infringement, freedom to operate, market surveys
and recommendations.
Early stage technology start-up companies use us on a project basis
to prepare IP strategic plans that set up their business plan and
direction. An in-depth analysis of the market will often identify
IP and technology gaps into which small flexible companies can manoeuvre.
In most cases, IP projects are started with the aim of answering
some basic questions asked by clients:
Internal IP
Typically internal IP projects are about identifying the value
of the existing IP and determining whether it offers adequate protection.
The aim is to achieve a competitive advantage in the market place.
This type of IP management allows our clients to make quick decisions
about their IP portfolio as the information is on hand
Managing a portfolio and maintaining a grip on what is protected
and where it is protected is often a difficult and complex task.
It is not unusual for IP portfolios to become fragmented over time
when you consider the process of examination in each and every jurisdiction.
For example, a patent that started out in Australia as a provisional
can have vastly different claims by the time it is granted in the
US as compared to the granted claims in The UK. This is just a matter
of the examination process and different IP laws in each country.
bwiseIP staff are specialists in IP audits, producing a clear and
succinct report on the status of your IP.
We can then put into place a management process to maintain and
improve the portfolio.
External IP
We can research specific technology areas to assist our clients'
knowledge of the external IP landscape.
External IP projects focus on what is out in the IP landscape,
how it affects the client and whether there are any freedom to operate
issues.
In addition, it is a means of identifying gaps into which new patents
can be filed.
